Research in the foundations of CS has been essential to the tremendous impact computing has on our daily lives, and will be similarly essential going forward.

I want you think just one of many possible scenarios what will happen. We all know the mathematical influence and how theoretical foundation are integrated into computer science and how all that influence the development of every aspect of human society today. What is all that doesn't exist, because somebody decided that is too theoretical. Now, image this for quantum computing, for example. You have responsibility not just for our generation, but for the future generations as well. The fruit can't be ripe without the roots of the tree.

As a "data scientist" and ML guy, I am shocked about that nearsighted pan of getting rid of theoretical foundations for these fields! AI is nothing with sound theoretical foundations!

I am a Leicester Computer Science graduate, and the foundational / theory of the department was an absolute delight to be immersed it. My degree opened my eyes to the fact that computing were about deeper ideas than applications, software engineering, and data. This change, if it were to be made, would be very sad.

First the Brexit, now this. They do everything they can to ruin themselves.
Short-sighted management decisions, no doubt. I hope this helps.
