This is a poorly planned shift of research focus and it is enforced in an unacceptable manner for an academic institution.

This is an extremely shortsighted decision, very damaging for the development of CS at the University of Leicester.

We all agree with Professor Nishan Canagarajah that decreasing research capacity, not only for Foundations of Computer Science and Math, but also for Philosophy, Humanities, Theology, Arts, Architecture (Engineering is enough), Psychology, Music, etc., can shape even better for excellence.

Interest in research areas varies with time. Now it may be in fashion (in terms of applications) AI, Data Mining etc. Tomorrow research could focus somewhere else. However, RESEARCH is important and no-one knows what future will bring even for areas that now are not considered "hot".

Like what have already been said by the others, theory is the foundation of computer science. Removing it will do more harm than good. A growing building will not stand without a solid foundation. Here I am referring to the students and future researchers we train.
Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Konstanz
