The fact that this is something that we have to fight for is beyond my belief. It should be a basic human right to make the decision to end one's life in a humane and compassionate way-,the same way we do for our pets.

It doesn't take much intelligence to be able to figure out that, given the diagnosis of a terminal illness, a human being should be able to make the decision to pass with dignity rather than continue to suffer.

As an emergency room RN, I watch and hear too many people with terminal illnesses as they suffer unnecessarily and beg for us to ease their pain and end their life. It's heart wrenching. Especially since we treat animals with more respect by euthanizing them to end their suffering, yet give no consideration to our fellow human beings by empowering them with the CHOICE of dying with dignity.

As an emergency room RN, I watch and hear too many people with terminal illnesses as they suffer unnecessarily and beg for us to ease their pain and end their life. It's heart wrenching. Especially since we treat animals with more respect by euthanizing them to end their suffering, yet give no consideration to our fellow human beings by empowering them with the CHOICE of dying with dignity.

In my case it was our father who suffered for 10 long years with Multiple system atrophy, formerly called Shy-Drager Syndrome, very similar to ALS and Lou Gehrig's disease. At the end, Dad was incapable of movement, or speech, or controlling any bodily functions. He literally watched his body die while being mentally aware of every decline. We had to hoist his body from bed to chair and chair to bed again with an electronic lift. He could only communicate in his advanced stage by blinking his eyes for yes or no, but that failed him also. I watched him die asking him to tell me what he wanted, but I could not even understand him when he was asking for help. We had to attend to discharging his bodily waste, clean and bathe him, and spoon feed him with baby food. Is this anyway to come to the end of your wonderful life? --Certainly our compassionate and so called intelligent political system must find a way for all citizens to have Dignity in Dying, not just three states.

We are moving forward into a more modernized civilization. We should allow the terminally ill to leave tranquil with the upmost respect if they so wish. As so many of us have had pets before, sick. All the money in the world would not take them out of harms way and for that, at the first sign of a long painful and miserable road, we put them out of their misery. To many of us we see our four-legged friends apart of our family. I use this example because- why not? Why not grant our loved ones, family and friends, adults in their right state of mind who are terminally ill, assisted suicide? No human being should suffer inevitably if they wish not to.

My mother died from mesothelioma. She passed nearly two months after her diagnosis. She suffered tremendously in those two months. While I don't think she would have opted for this herself I believe that other people would. I believe they deserve that choice.
