we really need to slow this hotel boom down...is there no other way to save a building then to turn it into a hotel...

We are growing too much too fast and quickly losing parts of Asheville that are what make Asheville...Asheville. We have plenty of hotels. We don’t need another one.

To the mayor and city council, I understand that having hotels downtown allows the city to recover badly needed tax revenue. However allowing our historic properties like the Flat Iron to be gutted for another parking hungry hotel is a stunning stupid idea! 1) Parking for the public is already low in the downtown area. Yes, you have the new fancy parking deck which is over 3/4 full on weekdays (Yes, I have tried to park there). Now you would allow a another hotel to have virtually parking privileges as a bonus. 2) You forget that downtown Asheville was a ghost town in the 60's-80's because lack of and overpriced parking killed tourist shopping which in turn killed small LOCAL businesses. People come to Asheville not to visit some high-end HOTEL but they come to SHOP at our local shops and EAT at our unique restaurants...both of which require public parking and construction-free access to the heart of downtown. So have you lost your freaking minds and let tax greed overcome common-sense?

It must be saved! Its history! Tourists come to see the shops, don’t destroy them!!
This is an iconic building in the city atmosphere and history. No more hotels are needed. This city is pushing affordable housing/business development away from downtown area. Instead becoming an epicenter of unaffordable hotels for the upper class; pushing the people that make Asheville, Asheville. The effects of such measures is deterring businesses and people actually living in the city. A place that I have called home for 25 years.
