CALL TO STOP INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FIRE FIGHTERS (IAFF) UNION FROM PREVENTING AND CHARGING FIRE FIGHTERS FROM VOLUNTEERING AS FIREFIGHTERS IN HOME COMMUNITIES.
Members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) are barred from volunteering as firefighters in communities that fall within the union's jurisdiction, a provision that has led to resignations in Ontario fire departments from Ottawa to Stratford in recent years.
This is a violation of any Canadian's constitutional right to choose how they volunteer in their spare time.
We call upon the IAFF to drop the charges against Mandy Gould and all "double-hatters" who volunteer their time to local communities, thereby sharing, in a meaningful way, with their community - as they wish. Further, there will be no fines, no financial repercussions and no job threat to these "double-hatters" (as they have been termed) and no on-the-job repercussions by fellow firefighters.

Watching Mandy Gould and others face these charges hits home because I know firsthand how much these people care about the towns they protect. I have been spending my nights talking to firefighters who are terrified to step forward but refuse to stay silent about this injustice. We are forcing these people to choose between their passion for service and their livelihoods.

Seeing this level of support for Mandy and her colleagues feels like a massive weight lifting off my shoulders. It confirms that people believe in the simple act of serving a community without fear of punishment from the union. This momentum shows that the people have our backs.

Without these volunteer FF many rural communities would have no fire service at all and they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience along with them.
It makes me sick that the IFFA are going after these hard working volinteers. From what I understand the president that is charging the "double hatters" was a "double hatter him self". That makes me sick.
As a Caledon resident I am appalled that this is happening to these paid volunteers. Sounds like the union is just looking for more union dues than considering the lives and safety of people. I'm disgusted! These poor men and women that do so much good!
Living in a town that only has volunteers I feel safer knowing full time fire fighters are on the force given their qualifications! This should not be an issue!
Shameful conduct by the union to treat double-hatters like this. These people help others with their volunteer work. This is far more commendable than other firefighters who have additional non-related full time jobs or businesses. This position by the union isn't even a logical one and should withdraw the charges immediately.
Sad they are being pulled away from volunteering
When a person is giving back to their community and providing their expertise on their own time they should be commended not punished.

Mandy Gould lives for firefighting, lives to help anyone in need. This blows my mind that on her free time she is not "allowed to use her professional skills to save lives. What is this world coming to, beats me.
