The South African Arts and Culture Youth Forum (SAACYF) has noted the state of disaster call by his Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa due to corona virus which is a threat to everyone.

The forum after consulting its members, and various arts, culture and heritage organisations have noted that this particular call will have a direct impact on artists, arts organisations, and businesses because of cancellations of various events such as theatre shows, festivals, exhibitions, showcases, Conferences, performances in various locations. This will then affect the artists, events organisers, arts organisations and everyone who makes a living from the income of such activities.

This corona outbreak will cause a big loss of earning to many cultural and creative practitioners who will not have any opportunity to work and make income during this shut down. It will be very defficult for the artists to meet their monthly obligation due to loss of income that will come with the four month plus shut down of activities that generate income for them.

The SAACYF is calling upon the South African Government to provide financial Aid support to Artists, Arts Companies and Organisations that will be affected by this Corona Virus outbreak so that they are able to survive for the next defficult coming month.

The SAACYF is also calling on governement to engage financial institutions to provide relief for artists during this corona virus period as they will not be able to make any income due to cancellation of various activities that provide income for artists.

The SAACYF is calling on government to provide Arts and Culture support Aid in the three Spheres of government that will be accessible to Artists during this defficult period.

The Artists of this country have always been put at the back seat. We are calling on government to consider this petition so that we are able to save guard the Arts and Culture of this country.

Always remember that as the country will be self quarantine at home. It is the work of the Artists that will be keeping the community strong during this defficult period.

Thank you for signing this petition.

The messages coming in from theater folks and performers are just heartbreaking because people are genuinely terrified about how they will pay rent. I am rushing around trying to get someone from the department to actually pick up the phone but it feels like shouting into a void right now. Please keep reading these stories because they prove exactly why this relief is not just a want but a total necessity for survival.

It's quite sad that everyone is sitting at home enjoying all this entertainment yet the people who created it are suffering. I'm a performer myself and imagine if I didn't have any other form of income or support? Where would I be? This is a necessary initiative, especially for new artists and upcoming artists.

The government should ensure that there is funding for artists by promoting the online sale of their material / artwork to all individuals who are currently at home as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, through social media, tv and radio adverts.

I run a SMME that rents sound equipment to mainly Taverns. I am also a DJ and I also organize events. Because of the presidents announcement restricting gatherings to 100 people I have had to cancel events and my clients have canceled bookings with me therefor I will not be able to meet my monthly obligations.

We are very worried in our band because all our gigs had been postponed until further notice due to the Coronavirus outbreak including international tours. This a huge setback on our side coz rhese gigs put bread on our table
