John loves his students and his work, and he has been one of the university’s best professors for over three decades. His abrupt termination four years early, with no benefits, shows a certain callousness of the institution I have not previously witnessed. He was one of my favorite professors, and after dedicating his life to the university, he deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, not quite the picture unfolding in this matter.

BBA, 1999. John is the only professor I had my entire time at Michigan that actually cared about teaching his students. I graduated from the B-school (pre-Ross donation) but the only instructor I remember is John. He may use foul language but at least he cares and can teach.

John’s class was the very best I took at U of M and he handled discussions of the most sensitive and personal matters with kindness and grace. He is a master of building community and breaking down barriers between students. I can’t understand why the university wants to fire him.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Joh, but I've heard so much about him through my daughter who took his class, and is a rising senior at Michigan. What an amazing professor. He taught her so much not just about academics and writing, but about life, about living, caring, loving... about the human condition. What a loss for the students and for the University if he is terminated. I don't have all the facts, as the administration is has not presented them, but it sounds like they are terminating an amazing professor based on the complaints of a few disgruntled students. What happened to giving the accused a chance to defend and explain. What happened to fairness, justice, and free speech. Michigan is certainly not practicing what they preach, how unfair for John, and what a loss for the students!

John was one of the most inspiring and thoughtful professors I had during my time at Michigan. He created a safe place for his students to share and I still think of the many lessons John taught us in class. It would be a shame to take this amazing experience away from future Michigan students.

If I learned anything from John that really stuck, it was the power of having authority over my writing. (Not to mention the grammar mini-lessons along the way!) As a rising academic, this has helped me tremendously. I was very fortunate to know John during my final year at Michigan. Regardless of what happens, thank you, John, for helping me learn to "scratch my itch." I only hope that more undergrads will have the opportunity to receive the (unconventional, but effective) academic and personal guidance from John.

John was my English professor my senior year of undergrad at the University of Michigan. He was and forever will be one of the best professors I have ever had. He has been so supportive in my career and has helped me out every step of the way. It would be remiss of me not to support him now when he has always been there for me. I fully stand by John and implore you to reconsider your decision to terminate such an incredible professor.
