John was hands down the best teacher I had during my four years at UM. He was incredibly dedicated to his students and taught us not only how to be better writers, but also about life lessons that I continue to think about and incorporate into my life today. I am deeply saddened that students will be prohibited from taking his class in the future. His passion for teaching was an inspiration and I have told countless people about all that I learned during my semester with him. He created such a strong community in every class, and reminded me daily of the beauty and importance of learning for learning’s sake. I hope he can continue to inspire and educate many more students in the future.

John is by far the best professor I’d had during my time in UMich. His lesson on “Carpe Diem”, “Quid pro quo”, and “Scratch your itch” forever changed my life in the best way I could’ve ever imagined. After I moved back to HK after graduation, I’ve been heavily involved in alumni activities, and without exception, I have been preaching about John’s class every year to different alumni, incoming new students and prospective students. John’s class was truly a defining moment and the best highlight in my college years. I simply cannot believe the school would let such a great person and professor go without give us a clear explanation.

John's class was instrumental in not only honing my skills as a writer but also helping me decide to become a teacher. By example, he taught me much about the importance of compassionate and honest feedback, a positive classroom culture, and bringing zest to one's role as a teacher. He has been a mentor and friend, and I hope the university gives him the respect he would show to any of his students.

John was my most memorable professor at the University of Michigan, the most encouraging, and the most genuine. I learned more in his class than any other, and have often repeated his "scratch your itch" mantra to myself in life decisions.

I used to walk John around town when he stopped at the homes of his graduating students to say congrats, take photos, meet parents, and so forth. Most would drop everything to come running and give him a hug or shake his hand. This is, of course, after having taken his class and had him perform my wedding ceremony. He's a legend for good reason. Vague statements about unprofessional behavior don't cut it with a genuinely iconic figure in the English Dept.

Is John Rubadeau batshit crazy? You bet he is and that's half of what makes him one of the -- if not THE -- best instructor at the University of Michigan. I'm sure I'll be called to task for "blaming the victim," but this truly BS dismissal crosses a line. Oh, did he make someone uncomfortable? TOO BAD. Big, brilliant personalities do that. Anyone who's not as meek as a church mouse is bound to make someone uncomfortable at some point. It's a true shame if this dismissal stands and future students are deprived the opportunity to have him as a teacher. It can be a life-changing experience.

John Rubadeau is charismatic, eclectic, and utterly brilliant. I've never met another educator -- at any level -- who was more sincere and more sincerely interested in helping students learn that this terrific instructor. The university's handling of this matter is absolutely shameful.
