An amazing person and professor. John is the most passionate professor that I encountered when I was at Michigan and I cannot begin to thank him for everything he taught me.

John was my writing professor in 2003 and I just read the news about how unfairly he is being treated. I am heartbroken for him, and for all the students he will not get to teach during this strange and unfortunate time. I’m with you, John.

My two children had him. He was truly an amazing professor and they absolutely loved his class. He is an idol and mentor to so many of his students.

John was by far the most thought provoking and inspiring professors that I had through my bachelor and masters programs. He was unconventional, but that only helped stick ideas in your head. I would hope that the “leaders and the best” could take that spark for teaching and run with it.

John is by far the most impactful professor I had at the Universoty of Michigan. I am saddened by this news. I always found him to be genuine, caring, and deeply thought provoking. I found his class to be the most important and the most helpful class I took during my undergraduate years. In a perfect world, his class and his method would be compulsory for all students at the University. He taught us to be thoughtful. He demanded the highest degree of work ethic. He required us to be empathetic towards our peers. He taught us how to communicate effectively while being critical thinkers at the same time. His departure is a big loss for the school, and I hope that this petition will help to reverse what’s been done.

John is a truly excellent teacher, and a worthwhile human being. I am ashamed of the university for firing him in the manner that they did, and at the time they did. If there was something you did not like, did you consider simply SPEAKING to him ?
I am surprised that you do not see his value. We are all saying that he was one of the best teachers we had, and I took a grammar class with him!! He is one of my top four teachers of all time, and the other three taught subjects which appealed to my ego or sense of self. John's presentation is not offensive to us, it is part of how he engages us in what I would previously (in any other class) have described as a "boring" subject. Have any of the people who chose to fire him taught grammar? Did their students remain engaged and interested? Would any of their students speak of them as we speak of John?
Think about it. If any of us are speaking this way about our grammar teacher, just how good is he at what he does?? This is not a subject that students (typically) sign up for because it satisfies aesthetic, ideological, subject-based or ego-based motivation. Who were your favorite teachers, and how many of them taught a subject which you identified with as fulfilling a part of who you were (or are)?? It far more difficult to teach grammar (or any other rule-based subject) and inspire interest, hold student's attention, or be spoken of and remembered as a great teacher.
John's students remember him and give him rave reviews. He has won teaching awards. And you see fit to fire him? FOR WHAT?? a green beard?? freedom of speech?? being older than (some of) his peers?? being opinionated??

This is ridiculous. John is a phenomenal teacher. This firing robs students from the opportunity to learn from this incredible man.
