Millions of convicted felons across the U.S. have completed their sentences and/or probation, yet their right to vote, hold elective office, serve on juries, etc., has not been automatically restored. In Florida, Governor Crist passed a bill in March 2007 giving back civil rights to non-violent felons. But he stopped short of making it a sweeping automatic restoration. Each case has to be individually considered buy a panel. And since there are millions of eligible felons, it will take years and perhaps decades before justice is finally served. Our petition seeks a federal class action that would force states to automatically restore civil rights to non-violent felons who have successfully completed their sentences. It has been shown in other countries, that when felons are treated fairly and respectfully and have their civil rights restored, they do not repeat past crimes. They move forward in getting educated, good paying jobs, and becoming productive and useful citizens of their communities instead of homeless beggars on the street. We are collecting donations to help fund legal costs and for the production of a made for theatre release documentary film on the American criminal justice system.
