Feed the Vixens

It is downright stupid for this subject to be taking up so much of our "worry time' when there are so many other considerations to deal with -- and when everybody knows that food service must improve without delay. It's a no=brainer. We shouldn't even have to petition and argue about it. Put the good ol' staff back in the kitchens where we need them.

Quality of food = quality of life, is second only to high quality of education. In-house dining service allows school to make money on special events, weddings, etc... And makes farm-to-table possible, allowing rural location to be a marked advantage not a drawback.

I graduated in 1975, when the food was home cooking superbly prepared by local staff, but I also have the perspective of working at Valdosta State University, where I am a faculty member who has eaten in dining halls managed first by Sodexo, then by Chartwell. While Sodexo did make an effort to provide a vegetarian entree every day and listed nutritional information for each item served, both went by the wayside when Chartwell took over, since much of what they served was extremely unhealthy in terms of fat and sodium content, and the most palatable food tended to be the fast food items served in large quantities to appeal to the students: burgers, fries, pizza, pasta, and more soda dispensers than milk dispensers. Such a diet is not only nutritionally unbalanced, but it is also setting students on the road to heart disease and obesity at far too young an age, if this is the kind of meals these firms typically dish out. So I beg you to give our girls the quality fare they need to perform at their best both physically and mentally. Thank you for listening.

When I was a student and after I volunteered for Amherst Rescue. We would drive the ambulance over to eat at Prothro. Food services also helped keep Sweet Briar connected to the surrounding community.

I am going to finish my final year at Sweet Briar. I know for the past three years, I along with many other ladies have seen thr worst from the food service such as, students being out sick for two days from food illness and finding mold on food. The quality of the food can improve and I vote for it to change for better.

Some of my best memories of sweet briar center around the delicious home made food. Unbelievably good food - we would lounge for hours on a sunday afternoon just talking and eating. Definitely some of my finest hours at Sweet Briar were in Prothro. Yummy, healthy and a huge draw for our boyfriends too ;)

Sweet Briar was known for its good food, lovingly prepared by the local help. I hope this can be reinstated.

Please remember - Dining Services should not be about "saving the college Money" or "making a profit" it should be about providing students with great, nutritious meals, covering all the costs related to Prothro with the money they pay for their meal plan. During Kevin's tenure "extra money" from the meal plan was always turned back to the college - please do not contract out food services just so the college can operate other non food/student related using the monies from the meal plan. There are far more areas at the college to make/save money that do not affect the students overall well being. Kevin Phelps dedicated 23 years of his life to providing award winning food to SBC students only to be humiliated and abused by the previous administration. He deserves the opportunity to rebuild the reputation of Sweet Briar Colleges food service.

Please consider this. It would be a greatboost in staff and student confidence.

I was part of the catering staff for SBC from 1984 to 2000. During that time we worked hard to maintain high standards and the long time traditions of food at the college. I'd love to see this come back.

Bring back the #1 college food in the USA award to SBC!!!

I suggest that Sweet Briar go back to real food, farm to table, buy locally and sustainably, put in green houses and raised garden beds and get the school to produce a large portion of its own food. If the community has fought this hard to keep the school going be examples in the arena of food also. There are many farms, culinary artisians that would love to sell what they raise and grow to a school. I hope the school uses consciousness in making this decision and stears clear of artificial, GMO, shipped across the country and world food. You are what you eat and how wonderful if the school supported local businesses, chefs, growers.

Bring Kevin Phelps back!

Please do not renew the contract with Aramark. Let's bring back good food to SBC and catering for special events!

I went to Sweet Briar in the mid 90s during the Archie Waldron era. I was a tour guide during that time, and I used to rave to prospective families on my tours about the delicious, award winning food. It was a selling point, and it should be again.

Make sweet briar sweet again!

Food is do important! If you won't give the option of meal plans, at least give the students quality food.

I'm not a Vixen, but am the mother of a Vixen [Class of 1993]. I spent a week in residence on the Sweet Briar campus during the summer before my daughter's freshman year. The two things that impressed me the most were the beauty of the SBC campus and the exquisite food service. Knowing that my daughter would be eating such nutritional and delicious food during her years at SBC was one factor [an important one] in my being 100% in support of her decision to become a Vixen.

students should not be served undercooked chicken or get food poisoning from food served to them. Need healthy and safe food!

Keeping Dining and Auxiliary Services in-house would be the best for Sweet Briar. Cost could more closely be adjusted as needed, income from special events would stay in SBC's coffers and most importantly: GREAT FOOD makes HAPPY students....HAPPY students STAY where they are HAPPY!!
