Healthy food makes for healthy minds. We all know this is true. I've heard griping and complaining about Aramark for a long time now and witnessed it myself back in April during a visit. Sweet Briar can do much much better than this. Is like to see healthful brains in action with a proper food service that focuses on what we all know is proper, fruits and vegetables and proteins, not processed.

Please re-institute the great food that Sweet Briar was known for, both to the students and to the Amherst community. Do NOT keep Aramark for a single thing.

To this day, my roomate and I wil wander in our conversation to "If you were at Sweet Briar tonight what would YOU eat?" And the conversation always goes the way I we wish we were eating there. It is unique to the pink bubble to be delicious, beautiful, safe, and remarkable in each of it's many ways. Good food shouldn't require thought. An easy yes.

I loved the Dutch yoghurt, that Jan Osinga made, when I attended Sweet Briar. I heard about it as a prospective student, and I thought that Sweet Briar had to be a remarkable place. It was. It is. And food (yoghurt and other healthy, delicious food) is an important part of the college experience. I know it was for me. Thank you.

The amazing food was one major reason I decided to come to SBC in 1997. Bring back the awesome dining services days! It'll bring in more students.

I was a student at SBC btw 1985 and 1990. The food was amazing and everyone loved the staff. My husband and I started going to SBC for dinner meals about 4 years ago. At first it was pretty good. The quality began to decline and so did our visits. The last time we were there (2 years ago), the dining area looked like a food desert. The food options were slim. The set up and cleanliness were below par. Everything seemed as though no one cared. We stopped going after that. I would love to return and enjoy a dinner meal at least once a week, and if it's in house dining prep, I'll be there... and I bring friends that pay too. I am a direct neighbor of SBC so this would be a wonderful advantage for me as well as the community. Please, please, please... what would your Mom do?

As a student beginning in the 60's and finishing in 2008, I can categorically state that the quality of the food at Sweet Briar has declined to a staggering degree in the past 50 years. Good food, locally administered and locally sourced when possible, is essential for the intellectual, emotional, and physical health of students.

As a recent graduate, I can attest to the horrible food from Aramark. Beyond the actual food safety issues that have arisen, there are the issues of nutrition. In four years, I gained forty pounds. It's not that I would always choose the unhealthy food and soda, it's that I had no choice but the unhealthy food or sugary drinks. The food was loaded with sodium and other preservatives. When I would come home for the summer, I always lost 5-10lbs. Most of this was in the first month home and most of it was water weight. The board needs to seriously consider other options that allow options of healthy food in addition to the burgers and fries.

In-house would be a fantastic way to add better options for varied diets and food preferences. Those of us that eat on the more vegetarian or vegan side of things often struggle finding good food options from 'big box' vendors.

I have noticed a definite decline in dining quality and service when the prior administration outsourced the dining program. I have heard things about Aramark's dining services division from other people who have used them and also from people who worked for them--the food quality is atrocious, they treat hourly workers differently than full-time workers (deliberately keeping hours low while demanding the same work as a full-time employee), tend to hire more hourly/temporary workers than full-time workers to keep costs low, and they do everything they can to maximize profits by providing as little service as possible.
Also, studies have shown that you really are what you eat. SBC students and faculty should have access to quality food if we want them to be successful.

Education is the most important thing but good food is a treat on any campus. My favorite time at college was eating the good food. It just makes you feel better and for what young adults pay for college now, they do deserve good tasty food and lots of it. Their minds and bodies are still growing.

please hire a. Staff for dining services, no more contractors. Pick a director with experience running an independent college food service, not someone that has only worked for contractors. Then let them hire a good chef with both college and special events experience as well as a conference center manager that can work with brides and businesses alike. Students deserve what we had in the late 90's with Kevin and chef Tim- they knew us and they listened to us! They taught us to love eating heathly with the salad bar that was awesome and the demo restaurant salad...we also had community. Faculty, students and Amherst county residents all loved spending hours in the dining hall. By going with this horrible company the ties to the community were cut. Faculty and students miss out on meals together.
On facebook I keep seeing three things that worry me:
1. That aramark is somehow still a candidate (horrible reputation, prisons won't even use them!)
2. That another contract company would be brought in. This is not good. No more outsourcing food- we need a director that works to keep Sbc students happy and works to increase revenue via special events for SBC,not a contractor
3. That this is about finances and enrollment. That is nonsense- our own team will be able to truly adjust to the needs of the college without worrying about having a cut removed from profits to cover corporate expenses and profit.
Let's not forget that in March we were told that it was because of finances and enrollment that our college had to close. Leaders made that choice without considering the opinion of its costumer : students, faculty, staff, alumnae and the community. We didn't believe that logic then and we don't believe it now. Just name Kevin interim director- if it turns out to be a poor long term solution then go contract. He deserves the first shot a fixing it though. He was forced out by Parker after nearly a quarter of a century of service with nothing but positive perfo

Please look into hiring Marlene Weber Delledera SBC'81. She is the head of food services of Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. She was instrumental in helping to organize several of the reunion fundraisers and has a huge interest and loyalty to SBC as well as decades of experience!

The food was great when I was there (1978--1982). It can be great again. What happened to our chef from th Culinary Institute of America? Don't we have some alums in the catering and restaurant business who could help and advise? Please ask them -- we all want SBC to thrive and for the new leadership to succeed beyond our wildest imaginations.
