Good food is important to college students! It was certainly an important factor (noted in the Princeton Review Guide) for me when I chose to attend Sweet Briar in 2001.

Please hear the alumnae on this issue! It is vitally important that the food service program is not only high-quality, but run by people who know and love the Sweet Briar community. The possibilities are endless when you hire someone who is personally engaged with the community they serve. This is unarguable in all areas of the school's operation. Why not this area as well?

In house food service truly is a recruiting feature for SBC. It keeps both students and their parents (you know the ones paying the bills) extremely happy.

I know the discussion on food goes far deeper than the administration's willingness to provide the students and community with a decent/delicious meal. There are benefits and insurances, contractual choreographies, food costs, human and facility resources to consider. I have faith that the college will make the right decision that will serve our nascent community. That is key to me: community -- we want to embrace a place where ALL of us can come together, share ideas, break bread, build relationships. It's anthropological fact. Prothro, and by extension our catering services, can be the center of that. I am excited to support the well-considered option selected.

Bring back the old ways. Faculty and staff went to the dining hall regularly. When food was outsourced, that stopped. Good food brings people together. What SBC needs is to bring the community together. Food always helps.

Fresh, quality dining services is possible and Sweet Briar should bring on their own team to provide this service. It has been done and can be done. No need to contract with outside sources that are more interested in the bottom line. Students need quality food and students today know what good food is and expect it, we should demand it.

This is a cause I feel incredibly strong about supporting. Sweet Briar's original in-house food service was an integral part of making my first year at SBC so special, not only in how the dedicated staff took great lengths to lovingly prepare foods that made me feel at home, but also in the way that the staff took such incredible care of me by accommodating my life threatening food allergies to nuts. No one could ask for a more special gift. Please bring our in-house dining services back this year, so that they can continue to share this gift with others.

There is no reason to be mediocre where food safe concerns are concerned. Aramark may have “Tiered” quality, but that is just an excuse for poor ownership, direction and service. Don’t buy into it, especially with pristine acreage and plenty of water & sun can create a home-grown substitute.
