We, the undersigned, support a proposed change in the City of Portsmouth zoning ordinance to make the keeping of farm animals in a Single Residence A (SRA) or Rural (R) District a Permitted use (changed from a Special Exception) under the criteria currently specified. We believe, that under the right circumstances and in the right space, the presence of farm animals in a residential area can add to the culture and quality of life of a neighborhood and reflect the core values on which the City was forged.
Please help preserve the land rights of others while supporting a self sustaining, green way of life that has been all but lost from many areas of the city. Thank you for taking the time to consider this proposal.
This is the story of the Annis family in Portsmouth, NH who have been seeking to bring their two horses, Tommy & Bugsie, home to their nearly 4 acre parcel of land adjacent to hundreds of acres of conservation land on the outskirts of Portsmouth, NH. Due to the opinions of a handfull of neighbors on one side of their land, the City of Portsmouth denied their request even though all obvious criteria for "farm animals" had been met. Instead, the city chose a vague criteria of not being met in that they believed the "characterisitcs of the neighborhood" would be changed by the presence of the two horses. It is the hope that more logical and realistic minds will porevail and that the city will see the error of their ways and make amends to allow farm animals on properties that are sufficient and viable enough to have them.
