A extension of the Bakerloo Line from the Elephant and Castle to Camberwell and Peckham has certainly been planned since 1922 and apparently since as long ago as 1906 I understand there are existing tunnels to commence the line and sites down the Walworth Road and in Camberwell were owned by London Transport in the past in order to provide the necessary stations. This is thus no new and vaguely considered idea. Camberwell has in recent years renovated itself to become a vibrant and thrusting community with active involvement in the arts and a large number of restaurants and bars catering to the young people who have decided to make their lives here - all providing enhanced employment opportunities in a former unloved inner city area.
Most important of all are the major institutions which are based in in Camberwell and are at present wholly inadequately served by the crowded and slow moving bus services , the traffic congestion, almost complete lack of parking and the existing, if improved, rail services. These institutions are in most cases world renowned and include Kings College Hospital, the Maudsley Hospital, the Institute of Psychiatry, the Headquarters of the Salvation Army, The Camberwell School of Arts, the Camberwell Magistrates Court, the South London Art gallery and the new Ortus Centre . Kings College Hospital has a million patient visits yearly, employs a total of ten thousand doctors and staff and its patient visits run into tens of thousands annually. It is beyond belief that there is no Tube service for their requirements.
A tube service to Camberwell and Peckham would not isolate Peckham which has its own , if more modest transport needs.
It is impossible to understand how a Tube link following the Old Kent Road could be of equal value.

I can see the benefits for BOTH proposed routes, but if it had to be one, I would choose Camberwell because it would make our lives alot easier

Sibi - completely agree. TfL have still not answered my FOI request, for their assessment/feasibility study information - stuff we need to get to put our case. Meantime come to the rally on Camberwell Green, 11am Saturday 29th - and make your views known that way as well.
