I think Columbian is a great school. The principal is one of the nicest people I have ever met. But I think a little extra time for lunch couldn't hurt, if it could be done within reason.

Love to see the time go up at lunch. Way to rushed.

I am 100% in favor of the kiddos getting longer for their lunch break and/or recess time - the few times I have joined my kids for lunch they have had to inhale their food which results in upset stomachs for the afternoon hours! It's just way too rushed! I would love to see them @ least allotted 20 or 25 minutes to eat their lunch and to relax for a minute or so before getting back to their work studies!!

Columbia has made a positive change in having recess before lunch. Research does show that getting the kids outside before lunch does improve behaviors and eating their food at lunch. In theory than they should get a longer lunch and return relaxed and refueled for the classroom. However in practice at Columbian, they are rushed out to play and sometimes don't even get to leave the blacktop. They are then rushed back into a rushed lunch. This is counter productive to any benefit that you might see placing recess before lunch. I would also like to see teachers get the opportunity to observe the playground once a week to assess social skills on the playground. This information is vital to their developmental growth and yet I never get this feedback at conferences.

We love Columbian, its teachers, and its staff and feel very fortunate that our children get to learn in such a caring and supportive environment. The lunch and recess policy runs contrary to this and is the only significant complaint we hear about school from our children. It is bad for them and even worse for their peers who do not have the same nutritional and play opportunities outside school that they do.
Please, please change this to a more reasonable and respectful policy. Thanks for everything!

Times I have eaten with the kids, I was not able to finish my food. I saw so much food thrown away. It is such a waste and hard on the children.

Alex especially could use more time. At least once a week he hasn't touched his lunch, then ends up acting up and gets introuble. Kids need daily exercise and the proper amount of time to eat. It's unhealthy to shovel food into your body. Your body needs time to register it. Exercise helps kids focus.

My kids often come home with uneaten lunches due to limited lunch time. I fully support the idea of adding additional time for recess and lunch.

Just one of the many reasons we moved from Columbian to Montclaire in October. My daughter in the past 2 months had made several comments about how much time they get to play and eat lunch at her new school. Never any complaints at Montclaire about not being able to talk at lunch another issue we had at Columbian.

I have always felt the children need more time to eat lunch. Much of the food is being tossed out or being brought back home. Both of my children say they never have enough time to eat everything and are rushed daily. Please allow for this change!

I have sat down with my child over the last 5 years enough times to know there is narely enough time to eat a peanut butter jelly sandhich and a snack pack fruit cup and a carton of milk. Theynare being rushed, also the food offered may be adequate in your eyes but not mine , not enough variety

A healthy meal and exercise would only enhance learning. Having meals thrown out and kids yelled at to hurry is irritating.

Nutrition and exercise are prerequisites to proper learning in my opinion. Academics are only one piece of a winning formula.
I agree not enough time for the kids
