Expanded lunch and recess time for our kids

While I understand that some of this valuable lunch time is spent talking rather than eating, I think it's sad that they are often told to hurry and not talk to be able to finish lunches in such a short time. It is hard to fit so many students into a lunch schedule that allows all children to eat at an appropriate lunch time but by allowing students to eat lunch first, then go out for recess could help with this. Starting lunch at 11:00 and then layering these lunch times as I've seen done at Arlington Public. In the military, as an adult, we had 7 minutes to eat from the time we sat down. That is with NO TALKING. I often felt sick to my stomach and anxious while eating. Kids should not have to feel this way. I know it is difficult to rearrange an already jam packed schedule but this is an exception that must be made. Thank you for all the teachers and admin do to keep our kids safe... Mrs. Beller is a great administrator and I'm sure she will do what she can to make this right.

I think this is a great idea. My kids bring home uneaten packed food all of the time and it is such a waste of money for our family. I would like to see their lunch and recess time lengthened. Thank you.

I also think they need small walking breaks throughout the day

This is not healthy for these children. Please allow them more time. I'am the grandmother of one of the students.

Conner comes home hungry and thirsty every day. Perhaps the break time should offer a drink and snack.

I would love to see more time for the kids to eat. They are too rushed and need to be able to eat what they bring or purchase!!

Especially with a child with special needs, having more time would be ideal. Thanks

I can't express enough how happy I am to see this petition!! I have expressed my concerns over both of these issues for years.

Happy to see this. This has been my only complaint for six years.

No doubt in my mind that kids learn better when a less rigorous schedule is allowed. I am a firm believer in allowing the kids more time to enjoy lunch. Their tummies will be full and it is better for digestion. They also will be more willing to want to go back to the classroom to be ready to learn.

Giving our children adequate time to eat, play, and be active will actually improve their learning, and not hinder it. The American Academy of Pediatrics position statement on recess: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/131/1/183

Even an extra 10 minutes of actual cafeteria time would be helpful.

The kids clearly need more recess time to let their brains recharge!!

My son is a 1st grader with Autism and he does not get enough time to eat. He often comes home hungry and his teacher has said that he doesn't perform well in the afternoons and has behaviors. This could be due to him not being able to have a decent recess time to burn off some energy and adequate time to eat all of his lunch. I even tried to get extended lunch time in his IEP, but sadly it was denied. I have seen the children line up, get sanitizer, and go through the line and by the time they do all that lunch is half over. I feel very bad for those towards the end of the line because they make have only 5-7 min to eat. Our children need this extended time for recess so they may be more active and they need more lunch time so they can get full.

My children often end up finishing their lunches in the car after school because they are hungry. This is a great idea!

I have eaten lunch with my girls and felt rushed, hopefully we can make the change. I think this would be great, also help with being more focused after lunch, which I know for a fact the third graders right now have a hard time with. Please sign!!!

My son is having a hard time completing his lunch with the time that is given to eat. I would like for him to have more time to finish his lunch, since it is the only meal he receives while he at school in the afternoon.
