I am in the Elkhorn Public School district, but wholeheartedly agree. My children do not have enough time to eat and are starving by the time they get home!

Can someone tell me Where is this sits with the OPS board right now? With the beginning of the school year starting up it has become a concerning issue with parents again and I would really like to see things get changed. My daughter came home today (4th day of school) and said they only had minutes and most children had 2/3 bites and needed to throw away lunches because they spent most of the time waiting in line. I am so tired of this and it should be fixed!

I wholeheartedly agree with this petition. This is something we must insist on for our children if we want them to learn good eating habits and actually have the energy to learn in the classroom. In places like France children have an hour to eat and it is almost considered another class because the teachers eat with them and help them learn table manners, how to serve each other and socialize. Seems like a good use of time to me and something worth adopting here. Thank you, Dasha, for standing up and making this an issue!!

Kids should get an hour for lunch just like adults and two recesses a day. The proposed 60 minutes is so modest with consideration to all the evidence provided. Who knows....the standardized testing scores may improve!

Even though I am in the Bellevue school district we face the same problems and this MUST change!!!

I work for OPS and am a parent. I would like to see our kids develop healthy eating habits.

Our kids need more time to eat and move around - my boys hardly ever have a chance to finish their entire meal, and they often tell me that they get less time to eat than they should because their classes don't get to the cafeteria on time.

It's time for a little common sense and compassion aimed at our children instead of "pencil-pushing politics" taking precedence!

Children need time to eat their food at a normal rate not shovel it down as fast as they can. Give them more time to eat and exercise before they have to go sit still again.

My daughter has autism and is in the Omaha Public School system. Lunch is a major concern where we have received great accommodations and assistance. I worry that other children are falling through the cracks. It is a long day for the kiddos and they need enough time to eat as well as get their wiggles out so that they can learn!

My kids positively need more time to play and eat and pay so much more attention after they've had a chance to recharge

Children need more time for lunch, recess, art, music and less testing.

I cannot believe that we have to have this conversation. Unfortunately people don't have common sense.

I could not agree more! My daughter currently attends Benson West, this would be a great opportunity for all OPS children and schools.

This should be the policy at all the schools in the Omaha Nebraska metro area.

The evidence is clear that children need more time for lunch and recess in order to maximize learning.

With the extended day our students need that time to recharge in order to focus all afternoon. Brain breaks in the classroom don't always cut it. Some lunches that are more time consuming for kids to cut or eat, take up the students' recess time. They need that time to recharge for the long afternoon ahead of them.
