I think this definitely need to be done. Kids are in school almost as long as adults are at work. Why shouldn't they get an adequate break as we do during our work day?

I belive this petition should be expanded to all of OPS because it's not just Columbian. I have two children at Catlin and in having lunch with them, I've experienced the same. My kids come home hungry and in having lunch with them, it's amazing how much food is wasted, often for lack of time to eat it. And they certainly need more time to decompress and socialize at recess.

I completed agree! Not only do they need time to eat, they need social time with the other students!

Well written and documented petition. I completely agree. We as adults get at least 30 minutes, usually an hour. Lunch and recess combined should be at least that. Honestly, I'd vote for more. Kids need plenty of social time, as well as time to digest both the food they've eaten and the lessons they've learned.

I am Lyra's grandma, and am quite concerned that she is often very hungry after school. She sometimes has food left due to lack of time to eat at lunch.

I am so happy to see this petition. It is true I have seen our students only get roughly 15 minutes to eat on a good day. This is a district wide adjustment that needs to be made! I truly don't believe it is the principals say and needs to come down from the top. Bell to bell instruction has over weighed this important time in the day.

Please start this change so our school may hopefully follow suit!!!

While I don't have a child at this school, I have seen this exact scene played out at a number of elementary schools and it's completely ridiculous. It teaches children unhealthy eating habits, in addition to causing way more behavior problems. Listen to these wise mothers and fathers! I hope this goes to the school board and is fixed at every elementary school.

My 7 yr old gets 30 minutes combined for lunch and recess. It is ridiculous. I have sat with him and felt like I had enough time to take two bites. The school says it's ok though because the children can choose to skip recess if they want more time to eat......smh.

Kids wait in line for 10 minutes, they eat for 10 minutes and then get shuffled out for 10 minutes of recess! Not nearly enough time!! Then they are hungry in class in the afternoon!

I've been working on a research paper in my college English class for the last couple of months. "Nebraska Department of Education should restructure school lunch schedules to give elementary students an extra fifteen minutes to eat, talk and take a break from cramming studies." I do believe it should be implemented nationwide.

I have had lunch with several of my grandchildren and have observed and experienced that they are not messing around and still do not have enough time to eat their lunch.

I have personally witnessed my child's lunch hour at Standing Bear Elementary. She is in 1st grade and on average they get about 15 mins for lunch. They are constantly reminded that they only have a couple minutes left. Who can eat under that kind of pressure?

Completely agree. Should be state wide.

Having 2 children and working at elementary schools has shown me how little time kids actually have to eat at school. Even though lunch time may be blocked out for 20 minutes, most kids only get about 10-15 minutes by the time they get through the line.

I work in various elementary schools and witness first hand that students are having to throw away food despite still being hungry because they do not have enough time to eat. If nothing can be done about the actual amount of time, then something needs to be done about the length of the lunch line and how quickly it moves.

Kids need longer breaks

I am signing this because kids absolutely need time to eat, somewhat digest their food, and play and socialize at recess. Everyone needs a break and this will help them learn better in the afternoon. Everyone deserves to eat lunch.
