The WA Government’s decision to privatise the management of the Midland Hospital to St John of God has resulted in their refusal to provide any reproductive health and family planning services.
Men and women wishing to access these services, which include contraceptive advice, vasectomy and termination of pregnancy, are forced to go to local clinics instead.
We are seeing an increase in protests and harassment of people accessing these clinics.
It is a legal right for women to access abortion and determine their own reproductive outcomes. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is a decision for the woman alone.
These protesters cause distress, intimidation and at times obstruct women accessing the clinics.
We call on the Barnett Government to to protect women by implementing exclusionary zones around reproductive health clinics.

I have submitted a formal request for a meeting with the Minister for Health to discuss the implementation of safe access zones. Our documentation regarding harassment at these clinics is currently being compiled for presentation during that discussion.

The volume of support has now reached a point where we have secured a formal meeting with the Health Minister's office to discuss the drafting of exclusionary zone legislation. We are currently preparing a briefing document that outlines the specific instances of obstruction reported at these clinic sites.

Handing over the management of Midland Hospital to St John of god was a travesty as they were never going to provide all the services the community has a right to expect. Not content with this, the religious lobby now harasses women who are legitimately attending local clinics. This campaign of intimidation must stop. At the very least an exclusion zone must be implemented around reproductive health clinics.
Setting up exclusion zones is the least the Barnett Government can do to protect women from harassment at reproductive health clinics. The heckling occurs at Midland because the Liberal govt decided to contract out a public hospital to the Catholic Church.
I hold the fundemental right of people being able to protest. However, I do not support the rights of protesters to interfere with the rights of women and their personal self health determinations.
There are so many levels of this issue that anger me, starting with the fact that you should not be able to tender for a public hospital if you're not going to provide these services.
Women have a right to attend this health service without harassment. The State Government has a responsibility to ensure women's safety, an exclusion zone is essential.
It is the right of every person to make their own decisions about their own body and reproductive health, especially if those decisions affect not only the rest of her life, but the wellbeing of a child
A public hospital should provide family planning services!
