The University of Prince Edward Island has decided to remove the mandatory English 101 class. This will be replaced by a critical thinking course on current issues. This decision will result in a lower level of writing and communication of UPEI students.
I spent the entire morning reading through the comments you all left and honestly the stories about how much those early composition essays helped people find their own writing style really got to me. It feels like the administration is just treating this class like some outdated relic instead of a foundation for everything else we do here so I am currently drafting a long email to the department head to point out that critical thinking cannot exist without the ability to put thoughts into coherent sentences.

I honestly never thought this would gain so much ground but here we are and the momentum honestly feels a little bit overwhelming in the best way possible. People keep telling me they worry about the quality of writing at UPEI and it is just wild to see how many of you actually feel the same way about these changes.

University education is supposed to be about fundamentals. Taking out English 101 is a shortcut that will hurt every student in the long run.

WHAT. This is ridiculous. People are already struggling to put a proper email together let alone an essay. Dont get rid of this!

Fix this. We need to be able to write good papers and express ourselves clearly. Why is this even a conversation?

Are you kidding me? Everyone needs to know how to write properly before they graduate. Critical thinking is fine but you cant communicate those thoughts if your writing is terrible.

Writing is a basic skill that needs to be refined in college. If they drop the mandatory course we are going to see a huge drop in standards.
