These lecturers are all ones that play a significant role in the history department and involve themselves in the wider university community. They are genuinely liked and trusted by a lot of the history students and UCL will be making a huge error if they go through with these redundancies.

I am deeply saddened and disappointed to hear about this. It is especially shocking to see that all three of my tutors from this term are included in the list. Jack, Tom and Alessandro have all been extremely supportive during my time at UCL and their knowledge and expertise should not be thrown away.

Whilst cuts have a reasonable financial explanation, it is once again a case of funding being stripped from teaching and used elsewhere in places students find little value. The quality of teaching at UCL is a mixed bag and certainly the lecturers on the line represent some of the best. Not only will teaching quality reduce but the cuts to the diversity of modules available is incredibly disappointing.

Dr Joe Cozens, Dr Jack Saunders, and Dr Adela Halo have all taught me at various points and I am extremely saddened to hear the university is even considering making any of them redundant. It would be a massive disgrace to let any of these esteemed scholars go and it is shocking that this university does not value its staff, and, by extension, the undergraduates who have opposed this move.

These lecturers have played an instrumental role in my university experience, guiding me not just through my academics, but also have been a great support to me in all other aspects and stresses of life. Their absence, resulting in a cut of support and expertise, will be detrimental to the student experience.

Our tutors always go above and beyond for us, to repay them with redundancies when UCL has accumulated the wealth it has is disappointing and outrageous. These losses will be particularly profound for study abroad students like myself who are losing our academic supervisor, Adela, as well as my personal tutor, Alessandro. Please reconsider.

This year, I took Tom Penfold's survey module on South African history. Tom is an incredibly supportive and helpful academic, who has managed to combine interesting aspects of South African culture and anthropological perspectives within this module - it is unlike any other UCL I've taken before and his approach was extremely refreshing. He and all the over academics being made redundant within the history department deserve so much better.

Frankly, it’s upsetting to hear that lecturers, including some I have had the privilege of being taught by, have been made redundant. I’m currently in Dr Joe Cozens and Dr Jack Saunders’ module, and I have gotten so much out of our lectures and seminar discussions. They have truly shaped how I think and write about British history. I sincerely hope that UCL will reconsider their decision here. To have been taught by Joe and Jack is a gift that I hope can be enjoyed by many generations of UCL History students to come.

Dr Alessandro De Arcangelis is one of the best seminar hosts I have encountered during my time at UCL. He has hosted seminars that have made me commit to wholeheartedly, not only out of interest for the topic itself but out of respect and admiration for Alessandro as a historian. It would be wholly unfair and a regretful decision to lay him off

I'm incredibly disappointed at the department's decision to make these professors redundant because, having been taught by Joe Cozens and Jack Saunders this year, they have shown nothing but dedication and passion for their teaching which will be very sorely missed if they were to leave. It would be no exaggeration to say their module has been the most well organised and taught out of the whole year. I believe this will set a seriously concerning precedent if valuable staff are dismissed like this and their valuable contributions and hard work disregarded. The opportunity to have contact hours and seminars with such talented, knowledgeable and experienced staff cannot be replaced by teaching from PGTAs and it would be incredibly worrying if this were to be the plan or if the history courses UCL offers are reduced.

This is a disgrace. My biggest inspiration in my first year was Dr Adela Halo and Dr Ian Stewart. Last year they let Dr Stewart go by denying him an extended contract and now they are letting Dr Halo go. She is a good lecturer, a brilliant mentor and inspires future academic vigour. If the university cares about upholding good academic standards they should not remove the lecturers who make that possible. This university is built on the backs of hard working teachers and academics, the students who care about the academic world will stand for them!
