Open Mill Valley / Remove the Blockade / Fairness to all Residents

During the heart of the Covid lockdown, the City of Mill Valley began closing downtown Miller Ave to support outdoor dining. This experiment continues to cause significant hardship to the retail businesses located inside the ‘blockade’. These retailers suffer a loss of their street parking and impeded store access from Thursday through Sunday. Meanwhile, all downtown merchants and residents face traffic delays, loss of parking and confusion. Many residents and visitors simply elect to avoid downtown on the weekend all together.

This petition has become necessary because the City has bypassed normal process and made these decisions without adequate community input. While we all support our downtown restaurants, Mill Valley should now follow other cities by allowing temporary ‘Covid parklets’, (like the one in front of Piazza D’Angelo), but not a blockade of the street on the busiest days for retailers.

It is time to end an effort that favors only two downtown businesses while harming others. Furthermore, future decisions around changes to downtown zoning, including Covid measures and traffic flow, must be taken through the normal process with minutes and open hearings, like all other City business. We ask the City to end the blockade, returning the street to normal access and traffic flow.

Updates

March 23, 2021

The city council continues to avoid a formal public hearing on the street closure despite our repeated requests. Call the mayor this afternoon and demand that they put this issue on the next meeting agenda. We need to keep the pressure on until they return normal traffic flow to Miller Avenue.

March 23, 2021

The momentum behind this effort proves that residents are tired of being ignored by City Hall. Call your local representative today to demand that they end this blockade and return to normal public processes.

The blockade pretty much enables one restaurant the addition of 5-8 tables that are often not in use and the signage is incredibly ugly. I think our community should support all businesses — not just one restaurant. The parking space push outs are great. The blockade is not.

I work here in Beautiful Mill Valley my view is of large concrete dividers and orange cones with confusing signs. Causes confusion with traffic and pedestrians. Make Mill Valley a destination again for our businesses that have been greatly affected from this street closure and bring back the beautiful view we have always had here. Store manager, Lisa Marie

Hey, I think you could adjust the parking lines in front of Margaret O'Leary or any retail establishment to allow folks to pull in park and shop. Tough times, take extraordinary measures. We want to support our retailers all possible ways. From our local yoga studio Red Dragon Yoga owner. Stephanie Schreiber

While the street closure is nice for those who want to have unlimited “capacity” it impacts those businesses who have been pillars in the community and driven tourism and revenue for many many years. This is another example of how the smallest of small businesses get pushed to the side as low priority. In this case, just so lattes can be served and tables can be set up that half the time don’t even have patrons.

This is drastically hurting my foot traffic at Sprout San Francisco, a family business on Miller Ave.

I am avoiding downtown these days because of the traffic caused by these road closures. Now that covid numbers are down and out-of-towners returning in droves, I hope we can return the downtown streets to normal traffic conditions. The current road closure disadvantages non-restaurants by limiting parking. It prevents me easy access to Mill Valley Market. Perhaps those restaurants could create "parklets" restricted to the parking immediately in front of their establishments. That seems like a fair compromise.
