The campaign group just posted the petition to Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter. A total of 3,251 signatures were collected online and on the streets across Ireland. Well done to everyone involved for their hard work and a big thank you to everyone who signed the petition!

It's difficult to describe how awful the conditions are and how ashamed I am to be part of a society that allows this to continue. Countries like Portugal have shown that you can treat asylum seekers with dignity with proper reception facilities and it is more cost effective than the Irish privatized system in which a small number of people make a lot of money from the misery of people, many of whom have already been traumatized. HSE also need to recognize the scandalous conditions as a child protection issue

Met a family only last week that are 8 years in direct provision, 6 of them living in ONE room, surely this is a violation of human rights

I call on the government to provide for people seeking asylum in a humane, safe, culturally appropriate manner. Administer the asylum application with necessary thought and efficiency ensuring people are not pawns in a stagnant system growing up, growing old in the unknown

As a primary school teacher I have seen the effects of these centres on the children who live there. A whole generation of children are growing up institutionalised while they wait for their applications to be processed. It is inhumane to expect children to grow up in this setting while their parents are denied the chance to provide for them.

We have just counted up the signatures collected by numerous people across Ireland who are involved in this campaign. Their hard work paid off and we have an additional 868 signatures to add to the 2,118 here. That makes a grand total of 3,166. With a week to go we are asking you all to get sharing and hopefully we will reach our target of 4,000 by next week!!
