I have found too many times at Elon that the people who come to forums and speakers focused in Social Justice bring the same people. Engagement is good to see, but when it is engagement that calls for change, another step needs to be taken to get the majority White population to realize their privilege, and the social injustices that come form the system built around this. I support this.

I attended Elon from 2015 to 2017... ended up transferring because I didn’t feel welcome as a WOC at Elon. There simply weren’t enough resources for BIPOC students. From what I’ve heard, not much has changed. Elon has to make the effort to create spaces and resources for BIPOC students. Admins have to listen. Otherwise students will keep transferring and the campus will be missing out on important and diverse voices that the university needs in order to grow. Take action Elon!!

Dr. Carew’s “Race and Ethnicity in Politics” class was incredibly eye opening to me and allowed me to get a new perspective on systemic racism and how much privilege I have as a person. It should be part of Elon’s Core Curriculum that all students, no matter what field of study they are in, are required to take a diversity class to broaden their understanding of the world around them.

I feel like for the first couple years of my life teachers allowed for racism to happen in the classroom and perpetuate racism because of not telling the complete history of race relations in this country. Desmond Tutu reminds us that passivity gives strength to the the oppressor. It’s time to make a change. Teachers are our main role models (in my case even more than my parents).
