Why stop at plastic bags?
I would ban plastic throw away cartons / containers as well.

This is an important baby step towards getting rid of plastic water bottles and reducing plastic in water, often mistaken as food by animals. Plastic particles act like magnets for PCBs, pesticides like DDT, herbicides, PAHs, and other persistent organic pollutants. 4.7 tons of plastic are added to oceans each year. 17 tons of plastic are collected from Kamilo Point and adjacent beaches each year.

While the single use plastic bags are a cheap for retailers, the ancillary costs to the community are too great to continue to sanction their use. http://fsjna.org/2015/06/no-waste-nola/

It is done in other future-focused cities, why not here. I just came back from a visit to LA and could not find a plastic bag anywhere...it was great!

I'd be more willing to bring reusable bags to stores/markets if I knew that plastic bags were either not an option or more expensive!

Granted I do use the obscene amount of plastic bags I have to pick up my dog's poo, I can get behind this petition 100% Tote bags, especially when thrown off a Mardi Gras float, are a practical alternative, plus I can promise you that the check-out ladies and gents don't throw you too much side-eye when they see you coming with them. If only we could get recycling in this city!! Until then, please sign this petition and share with your peeps!!

OH PLEASE. The plastic bags are multiplying exponentially under my sink because I can't bring myself to throw them away and they can't be recycled in New Orleans.
