On Thursday night (12/11/14) the U.S. of House of Representatives passed a $1.1 trillion dollar spending bill that saved the government from shutting down. However, what most do not know the House proposed a slash of $303 million in annual funding for the Pell Grant program. If the Senate votes to ratify this bill the Pell Grant would trim down the program by 1.3% to $22.5 billion. Coupled with a rise in tuition and dramatic cuts in states education budget the proposed slashing of the Federal Pell Grant would only exacerbate the Student Debt Crisis!. Currently student loan debt is at a record high of $1.3 trillion! More than 60% of African American undergraduates and about half of Latino students rely on the Federal Pell Grant to assist in paying for tuition according to a recent study done byInstitute for College Access and Success (TICAS). Consequently, students will now be forced to take out student loans that are high interest rates or take time off from school to work in order to afford to pay for the cost of college. Let's tell Congress enough is enough proper funding for education is a priority to sustaining a healthy future!
