Dear Professor Tagkopoulos and Teaching Assistants of ECS 171,
We, the undersigned students of ECS 171, respectfully request consideration for an optional final exam policy for this Fall 2025 quarter. Specifically, we would like students to have the choice to drop the final exam and keep their current course grade based on Midterm 1, Midterm 2 (pending score changes to midterm 1 if scored better on midterm 2), and the Group Project if they are satisfied with their performance.
Our request is based on the following thoughts:
- Midterm 2 was unplanned, originally not part of the course structure, and was introduced later in the quarter.
- Even though this unexpected midterm ended with students scoring well on it, we believe that most-all course material has been covered prior to project presentations (midterm 1 and midterm 2).
- Allowing the final exam to be optional would help balance a sense of fairness to the grading expectations set earlier in the quarter, and still allow other students who didn't score well on midterm 2 to take an optional final to improve their overall examination scores.
Thank you for your time, understanding, and consideration. We greatly appreciate the effort you put into teaching and supporting us throughout the quarter.
