On December 12, 2017, Doug Jones was elected as Alabama's first Democratic senator in a quarter century. In a stunning and unprecedented upset to the GOP, Jones, a committed civil rights attorney, beat Republican Roy Moore, a religious zealot accused of molesting several underage women.

This victory not only signals an adherence to common decency on behalf of the electorate, but also delivers a blow to Donald Trump's misguided and dangerous "Make America Great Again" agenda. When Jones joins Congress in January 2018, he will help Democrats move one step closer to taking back the majority in the Senate.

Now to the choice of People Magazine's 2017 Sexiest Man Alive: I think most of us can agree that this year's title was misguidedly and hastily granted to country music singer, Blake Shelton. I have nothing against Blake personally but fall into the category of people who believe this was an odd choice. While he is a man who is indeed alive, this does not qualify him as sexy.

At first glance, Doug Jones may not seem like a natural replacement. Like Blake Shelton, he isn't conventionally sexy or flashy. However, Jones has accomplished an almost unimaginable feat as a Democrat in deep red Alabama, and will certainly help us move our country back towards a path of sanity and inclusive progress.

I would argue that many people will not miss Blake in this title and will be grateful that the baton has been passed to someone far more deserving; someone who has made a truly profound impact on America in 2017. Mr. Shelton himself may even bow out gracefully and without a fuss, unlike Jones' Senate opponent.

Please support me in petitioning People Magazine to rectify their 2017 choice of Sexiest Man Alive by nominating Doug Jones for the title.
