Highlands parent who opposes this program for any of our schools. Look into a natural play area like at Highlands! Our kids need unstructured time. An adult staff member or parent volunteer starting a ball game or providing an opportunity for a kid to "join in" is fine. This program is not. All of the latest research about child development is showing that children need unstructured time to develop into independent thinkers and doers. We don't need a helicopter playground program. In addition we have not been given information regarding the process or cost of signing this contract.

Recess is NOT gym. Leave the structured play/games to the Physical Education dept.

there needs to be more talk and discussion about this program and what it entails
Kids need some unstructured time. They need the freedom to make some choices in order to learn how to do so.

I absolutely support removing this program from Concord or any other school in Edina. It is concerning enough to me that if it stays I will seriously consider sending my two sons to a different school than Concord.

Kids need to be creative, explore and to be able to solve their differents on the playground. Spreading there wings and running around fuels their brains!

This is a solution for a problem we don't have. Kids need more unstructured time, not less.

This new structured program seems to be a bad fit for our school.
Miles has been very sad with the change and he wants to just get out there and have fun!

Concord Elementary School Parents for Free Play at Recess

This new recess program is being piloted at Concord and Normandale with the intent to roll out to all of the elementary schools in Edina next year. This is a spot for Concord parents in particular to be heard. However, parents from the other schools may want to pay attention and ask questions.

To be factual, it's not a Concord program. It was brought forward by our district. It's piloted at other schools so I encourage the petion owner to clarify that . Thanks.

Let the kids play! My child came home saying he couldn't play soccer? Why wouldn't you let a kid play soccer! There is no evidence that our school needs this. Why are we fixing what isn't broken.

Very nicley stated.
In addition, in our high tech. world, our children are already robbed of so much face-to-face, peer interaction experience.
AND YES, PART OF LEARNING INCLUDES CONFLICT RESOLUTION.
Instead of CONTROLLING the children's lives - try to GUIDE THEM ON HOW TO live & be successful IN THE REAL WORLD.
And YES, LETS HELP THEM WITH CONFLICT RESOLUTION.
Let's try TEACHING them how to positively handle, bulling, learning differences & real life challenges.
Starting with education LEADERS who DO GET the wild idea, that NOT EVERYONE AGREES WITH THIS.
And it's ok.
At NO POINT, has any school staff acknowledge this New Recess Plan.
When IN THE REAL WORLD,
It's addressed, here is the NEW RECESS PLAN.... We will try it for ______; if it doesn't work here we will _______; and this is WHY we like it FOR OUR SCHOOL.
From DAY 1 - we were bullied into this PLAN. And fed empty statics all about WHY it is SO GREAT..... Somewhere in this world.
And yet STILL, after the concerns arise, the school staff has not bothered to ask WHAT we think of it & WHAT WE SEE.
Look up the definition of RECESS.
It's laughable, to include the word RECESS, in this "plan".
You have our children & we let you micromanage the hell out of them ALL THE OTHER HOURS.
BACK OF RECESS.
It is DESIGNED with the intent to KEEP ADULTS OUT OF IT.
Lastly, try hiring staffing that CAN handle getting the children inside.
Instead of pushing overpriced training on current staffing - who can't handle the children, IN YOUR OPINION, and they aren't even facilitating your "New Recess Program"!!!
I heard TWO staffers YELLING AT THE CHILDREN. Over & over.
Was that in the training?
They yelled at the children, and that is how I KNOW WHAT THEY SAID.
- GET OUT OF THE FIELD
-THE SIDEWALK IS DANGEROUS & NEVER, EVER GO NEAR IT.
