The points in this petition are right on! There must be a traffic study, environmental impact study and I think an economic study to show why a beautiful, quaint town like Abingdon would need a commercial development like this. One of the beautiful sights approaching Abingdon is The Meadows at Exit 17. What a total shame to destroy that.

We love Abingdon, we chose to live here, and we shop local whenever we can to preserve what we love about it. We loathe even having to drive through the next town over. Why? Its over-commercialized atmosphere. This is the wrong direction, for Abingdon.

How about bringing in some real paying jobs for the people...oh that's right, focus on tourism and being historically correct!

Please do not re-zone the area around the Creeper Trail. It WILL impact the trail negatively. The Creeper is a wonderful treasure in the middle of town that is so peaceful and it is enjoyed by so many people every day.

First of all I don't think that any historic land should be rezoned for any major development. It totally undermines and goes against the purpose of the historic zoning. There is plenty of room for that type of development in other non-historic areas that won't affect the natural and historic beauty that is currently in place. Second, before any development on this scale is started there needs to be a plan for traffic flow in place that takes into consideration future congestion problems. Right now there is already a problem at both morning and afternoon rush hours that needs to be fixed, not multiplied by whatever development they want to shove in on top of it. I don't think that the people in charge are focusing on anything but tax dollars that they can put in their pockets.

I've heard that town wouldn't let other retail come into town because of its history and now they're all for this.......makes absolutely no sense

I enjoy running on the Virginia Creeper Trail each week and enjoy the tranquility and beauty it gives. We don't have enough of these places left. We need to be sensitive to destroying things that cannot be restored.

As an Abingdon native, I find the proposed rezoning an absurd idea. The negative impact on the small town charm and pastoral beauty of that area, particularly on the trail, would be great. I currently live in Knoxville and routinely have talked with people here who make the 2 hour drive up there to ride the trail. The reason they come to spend their hard earned dollars at the small businesses in Abingdon is precisely because of the charm and beauty that is there. If we want to turn our town into a place just like any other, less people will be making such drives and less people will move back to Abingdon and retire. I think this could destroy much of what makes Abingdon a great place to visit or live. With the coming Wal-Mart, we need to fight as hard as we can to preserve what we have left of the town I grew up in.

Perhaps revitalized the more rundown parts of town and not interfere with one of the bigger attractions Abingdon has to offer? AHS Class of 2000.

I have lived here and grown up here most of my 27 years on this planet, and I would be devastated to have a historic landmark tarnished by businesses. I am all for the growth of the town of Abingdon, but there's other places that are better equipped to handle the influx of traffic and changes in environment within our town limits.

There are dozens of other places easily suited for this. Guaranteed that No one who has moved away from this area, will not be saddened by this obvious buy out of our town government.
