My beloved granddaughter, Stella Griswold, is heading for first grade at PS101Q in Forest Hills this fall. I am extremely concerned that Stella might be assigned to the classroom of Richard Parlini, a disgraced teacher who has a well-documented record of physically and verbally abusing the children in his care. The DOE must do absolutely everything it can to keep my grandchild, and everyone else's children, away from Mr. Parlini and free from harm.

This is a no brainer...any allegation of violence against children (unless completely disproven) should eliminate any person from being involved in our children's lives!!

Richard Parlini should not be working in a school or any setting near children or other vulnerable populations. This is unacceptable.

Our kids always come first. We need to protect our young and learn from past mistakes instead of accepting circumstances which could allow the same situation to repeat itself.

Zero Tolerance for Physical Abuse or Verbal Abuse by Teachers
I have a wide and varied teaching experience. I have been a full time classroom teacher of instrumental music, music fundamentals, and music history, and a technical trainer of software development for adult professional software developers. My experience includes the Queens College preparatory program for children (3 & 4 your olds); private schools (3 year olds through students 14 years old), and Hunter College High School (students 14 - 16 years old).
The goals of childhood education are are to impart information, teach thinking and reasoning, nurture talents, impart work skills, stimulate creativity, impart standards of behavior and standards of social interaction, and to do all of this while creating a positive experience so as not too impede children's natural enthusiasm, positivity, and desire to learn. Every parent has experienced the full time nature of this work, and at the end of the day, as parents we are usually tired, and a bit less patient. Multiply the demands of that work by the 25 to 35 children in a classroom, and you have an inkling of the need for patience and professionalism that are demanded of a teacher. It is taxing work. But that is the job.
There is no acceptable excuse, for physical abuse, verbal abuse, and ridicule. Teaching is a profession. Every profession has standards of conduct. A teacher who engages in physical abuse, verbal abuse, or ridicule, has ceased to act in the role of a professional. Such behavior crosses a line that invalidates that person's suitability to work as a teacher.
While such behavior is an outrage, the fact that even a single proven instance, let alone multiple instances, results a 1 or 6 day training, and a minimal fine is madness and a dereliction of duty by the responsible supervising personnel and/or agencies. Does anyone believe that a 1 or 6 hour training and or a minimal fine (or even large fine) will result in a change of behavior?

Mr. Parlini has no business being in direct contact with children. There are many too many documented instances of this man being a danger to the well being of children.

Richard Parlini should never again be permitted to directly supervise/teach children, particularly young, elementary school-aged children. He does not have the temperament necessary for the power of that position and has proven himself to be unremediable, as evidenced by the multiple New York State Education Law Section 3020-a dismissal proceedings filed against him which substantiated many reported incidents of egregious acts of corporal punishment and verbal abuse perpetrated by Richard Parlini during the first 14 years of his employment at PS 101Q. He chose to settle those cases in 2010 and 2014 as his guilt was proven by NYC DOE attorneys. When he returned to work, in an administrative capacity, at PS 101Q in the 2014-2015 school year, he pushed the envelope and would purposefully engage the children in the hallways and even disrupt class time to do computer work while students were in the classroom; the school administration needed to discipline him multiple times after receiving reports from parents of his continued transgressions after his return from his second suspension in the 2013-2014 school year. If the UFT insists on his continued employment, then Richard Parlini should be assigned to work somewhere away from children and certainly never again unsupervised in a classroom full of children. Children should be safe at school. Thank you!

Mr. Parlini would be better suited in a position that did not entail direct contact/engagement with elementary school students.

I've been a teacher for over a decade and I understand the challenges of classroom management . Some people just aren't cut out for this type of work. It's time for Mr. Parlini to find another vocation.

Behavior previously defined as unacceptable that has not been demonstrably corrected should not be practiced on our children.

unacceptable to expose children to this nonsense. Mr. Richard Parlini should not be reinstated period.
