I support the Midwives program in Attawapiskat. We have the right to choose where we birth our children.

In October 2012 I brought midwifery to Attawapiskat First Nation. I did this on the advice of the mothers of Attawapiskat, the elected leaders of the Mushkegowuk First Nation, the WAHA Board of Directors & the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada in the face of fierce opposition from most staff physicians at WAHA with their patronizing and backwards colonial mindsets. In doing this, an outstanding midwife named Christine Roy came to serve the mothers of Attawapiskat. Five years after this, the Ontario government introduced 5 new sites throughout the province to support maternal health and wellness in indigenous communities. Attawapiskat First Nation and Christine Roy are on record as provincial leaders of midwifery in First Nation communities and allowing this to be taken away is simply wrong.

You will be doing this community a disservice if you remove or limit the midwifery program. That will result in more expenses to fly pregnant women out for check ups, thus removing them from the comfort of their homes and their families especially during the birth of their child if they choose to have the baby in the community.

Stop it. Just stop it. How can this be happening? Who has given anyone the right to take away birthing choices. This is absurd.

Woman and families should have the right to give birth in their communities! It is not right that they be forced to leave their communities and families to give birth in isolation. This program is vital to the healing of our people!
