100 years with roosters and now the county wants to force the owners to get rid of them because of one complaint? Disgusting

Roosters are wonderful beings and have a right to live!

Been on Chanticleer, [Rooster in French] since 1976, chicken alley, leave the roosters alone!!

Chickens and roosters are not a nuisance, especially when they are a part of the community of Live Oak’s history and livelihood.

Let the roosters stay !!!!

Santa Cruz County is about nature and simple living.

Be kind to roosters, they deserve to live too!

I’ve known this family for 48 years. The single complaint and the County of Santa Cruz should back off!! I’m appalled!

Grandfather in the rooster. His house has been on Portola Dr. longer than any standing there today. The rooster is the patriarch of Portola Dr. Don’t mess with Grandpa.

Anyone who lives close enough to hear that rooster moved in next to a rooster. Sound pollution is something most of us live with. We choose what we can handle and what we can’t. Don’t like the sound of a city bus on your road? Don’t live on Portola Drive. The same goes for the rooster. I have to say, in terms of sound pollution, I’d rather hear Owl every morning than the traffic noises and the bus that passes intermittently all day long. I get where your neighbor is coming from. We all want more peace and quiet, but you have to pick your battles. It’s easier to take on a little kid’s beloved pet than the city metro.

I like the sound of chickens and roosters when my neighbor had them. Please keep Live Oaks chickens.

Lovely family legacy needs to live on.

Destroying our ability to engage in our normal local agricultural activities is wrong. As we build more houses, we should not destroy the very lifestyle that many of us have engaged in in these Live Oak neighborhoods for decades! Having roosters allows for hens to naturally hatch their chicks and this is great for local children to be able to see the natural life cycles. This area used to be chicken farms - now we cannot even raise chickens naturally! This undermines our children's connection to animals and the land. We have had to terminate our rooster - but we think it would be better for the community to allow a few roosters in the community.

Whoever is complaining about this innocent pet rooster should know that they are essentially signing his death warrant. There are no rooster homes left in Santa Cruz County or any other county, because all the rural homes where roosters are technically still allowed are already full with unwanted roosters that neighbors complained about. So where is this rooster supposed to go? All sanctuaries are beyond capacity and Santa Cruz Animal Services, like most animal control agencies in California, kills essentially every rooster that comes through its doors. Please honor Santa Cruz’s spirit of tolerance and let the poor rooster live.

Can’t we agree to no new roosters? Pets are family. I get my eggs nearby in Live Oak. From a home with a few chickens and a rooster. I don’t expect it to last FOREVER. But they are also NOT ADDING new pets of this sort.

I'm a long time resident, and I fully support hanging onto this little bit of history and rural life. Love chickens!
