There has to be a happy medium. We have two well behaved adult dogs whom love to be free of their leash. They are always under voice and sight control.

I think this would be such a great thing for dogs and their owners. Our Dakota loved this beach because the water was always calm and there were a lot of doggy friends to play with. He passed in November, but we are hoping to have a new pup to bring there this summer. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm not a runner. If I was put on a leash it wouldn't be a big deal. But, if I was holding the leash of some of the runners on Bainbridge, they would go nuts not to have a chance to run, dash, splash and dart. I'm just sayin'...

dogs need a place to socialize without leashes. pritchard park is the perfect place for dogs to roam, run, swim and just hang out

I agree Sue... the thing is, dogs (and kids) need to run. When did people get so smothering about leashes? Its akin to the play dates for their kids. Everything gets controlled to a fault. We're turning into Stepford Wives & Husbands Island!
My dogs don't like the dog park. They're smaller and are intimidated by the other dogs. They don't run... just hang by my side.
I live on this semi-rural island to enjoy the freedoms that once came with rural life. These rules stifling that freedom for ourselves and our dogs. I derive great joy watching my dogs run and play and chase one another and be free. Its a pleasure I refuse to give up... dammit.
So here's the thing... I don't know how important this petition will be, but it can't hurt. We seem to have stalled at the 395 mark. I'm hoping y'all will help push this by posting it on Facebook, Twitter, whatever you choose. Just keep driving the point and asking people to sign. I've posted it twice on Bainbridge Islanders on FB so I don't want to overdue it, but you guys could do so. I'll try it on Radio Free Bainbridge. I'm counting on you to help. Let's keep the momentum going. Its that important!

I regularly enjoy Pritchard Park (several times a week) with my leash-less dogs. They love chasing waves made by the ferry and are happiest running up and down the shoreline and fetching their ball from the water. We tend to go during off-peak times and nearly always the only other people there have leash-less dogs. In the four years I've enjoyed Pritchard, I've always found fellow dog owners to be courteous of others and in control of their dogs. Having off-lease hours at Pritchard is the perfect way to accommodate multiple users and honor those of us who have come to love our beach time (and that includes our four-legged friends).

When I first moved to this island I was surprised not to find any stretch of coastline where my two Newfoundland girls could swim. They were originally bred to swim and are most happy in the water. I only happened to stumble on Prichard, and it’s been our weekend go-to spot since. There need to be a variety of places on the island - places where people can enjoy nature without dogs. Places where dogs can go on-leash, and places like Prichard where dogs are allowed to be dogs.

Many dogs cannot get enough exercise at the end of a leash, and dog parks don't work for all dogs (or people). Some dogs -- older animals, those with ortho problems -- can't run and really need to be able to swim somewhere. Fortunately, we live on an island, and there's a way we can all peacefully coexist! Off-leash hours at Pritchard Park would be a great step in the direction of making time and space for dogs to be dogs.

Dogs love to swim and they can't safely do this on a leash. I like to consider the what if scenario: What if I lived in a home with only dogs and only occasionally got to be with humans. Wouldn't it be fun to swim together?
