Re: H.5034

As residents of Charleston County School District 20 (the peninsula), we are concerned that the proposed use of county council lines for the CCSD school board will diminish representation of downtown schools.

While other areas of the county may support this measure as a means to gain accountability, the opposite would be true of the peninsula, which would comprise a minor part of four separate zones. With the proposed lines in place, it is likely that D20 would not have a resident on the county board, leaving D20 families little if any voice over decisions about our schools. In addition, our school and neighborhood communities would be divided which makes no sense.

As you consider structural changes to the CCSD board, please ensure that D20 receives what ALL communities want— a full, meaningful seat on the Charleston County School Board. Please delay single member districts until the 2020 census is complete and new lines can be redrawn so that the peninsula can have fair representation on the county board.

this is getting way more energy than i ever thought possible. its clear now that people downtown are really worried about losing their seat at the table.

im still having conversations with local offices about how these proposed lines would really hurt our peninsula schools. honestly the feedback from families has confirmed that were all worried about losing our voice in district decisions.

Ridiculous that we have to fight for this. D20 matters.

D20 getting carved up like this is a huge mistake. STOP IGNORING DOWNTOWN.

The peninsula needs someone who actually lives here and understands our specific issues. This new plan is just a mess.

Why split our neighborhoods up? Just leave it alone until we have better maps.

This will just leave our schools without anyone fighting for them. We need a dedicated seat.

Representatives for each district should be mandatory. After all, how does a representative in a different district accurately vote for what those constituents want?

Please make sure that D20 continues to have a voice.
