Re: H.5034

As residents of Charleston County School District 20 (the peninsula), we are concerned that the proposed use of county council lines for the CCSD school board will diminish representation of downtown schools.

While other areas of the county may support this measure as a means to gain accountability, the opposite would be true of the peninsula, which would comprise a minor part of four separate zones. With the proposed lines in place, it is likely that D20 would not have a resident on the county board, leaving D20 families little if any voice over decisions about our schools. In addition, our school and neighborhood communities would be divided which makes no sense.

As you consider structural changes to the CCSD board, please ensure that D20 receives what ALL communities want— a full, meaningful seat on the Charleston County School Board. Please delay single member districts until the 2020 census is complete and new lines can be redrawn so that the peninsula can have fair representation on the county board.
