The trout fishery is getting worse by the year, which is incredibly sad. We need to be very proactive here, as it will only continue with climate change and an government that focuses all efforts on restocking vs habitat renewal, scientific study etc…

Fly fisher in my 2nd decade of fly fishing the north west streams of Tasmania. The fish stock have declined in a catastrophic way. In part due to regular, reoccurring large flooding through the river systems at the tail end of the spawn, and water reaching up to 29c for weeks at a time during February/march. But the biggest impact, undeniably has been cormorants, I have seen flocks of 100 plus flying over sheffield, they have decimated the streams and moved on for now.... but the lakes are suffering instead. All the large and small streams the in the north west of the state as well as Huon systems need restocking with wild fry and fingerlings from the Derwent or great lake. NOT large or Developed fish as it results in damaging the remaining fish stocks.

Our trout fishery has gone from one of the best in the world 10 years to now an absolute disgrace. Fisherman used to come from all parts of the world and Australia to fish for our wild brown trout. Now they don't bother coming because of the poor state of our fishery. I have been trout fishing our rivers and Central Highlands for over 50 years. The last decade the fishing has declined substantially and the last 2 years have been my worse seasons ever. IFS need to take a leaf out of Victorian Fisheries who nurture and look after their fishery. If something is not done soon it may never recover.

It's about time the fishery came first with old school approach to the core basics of fishery management which has been completely ignored. IFS has made so many bad decisions in the last 15 years. Our fishery is disgraceful.
