There must be other ways to fight rabies. Foxes are vital to the health and overall well-being of our environment. Do Not Slaughter Foxes!

Why can't you use the oral vaccine like they do in other parts of the state?

If you can take in the traps, you can take in the vacine.

Trapping does not work as a solution. The Oral Rabies Vaccine has eliminated rabies in most countries in Europe altogether. Let's work on this!

Please do not kill the foxes. There are better ways to address rabies in the state without decimating a population that keeps rodent and therefore tick populations down. Addressing this problem with cruelty will cause another more significant problem that will be much harder to control.

This method is not only abhorrent, it doesn't work.

Indiscriminately killing a population is not only a lazy solution, it’s a short sighted disaster in the making. What happens when the rodent populations explode? Do we stop with the fox? Raccoons, skunks, etc also can carry rabies. Do we just start killing all them off too? Just in case? There are better ways to address the issue.

This is absurd.... The mass killing of any species is no way to deal with a problem!!

I really don't think killing everything in sight is the answer. From what I understand, rabies is not new here. I would rather try something less lethal... like leaving out rabies vaccine in bait. Or ANYthing else besides death to everything with four legs.

I do not think killing all the foxes in the area weather they have rabiea or not is acceptable. Why is it humans always take the most destructive approach when animals are involved. They have baited racoons with rabies vaccines over the years so why don’t they use the same approach here. Most likely humans have encroached on their habitat and is causing the increase in Rabies. Why the huge increase?

Agreed that this is not the best approach. As someone who works in the sciences, this makes me cringe as according to the scientific literature, it doesn’t sound like the best approach. Something needs to be done very quickly and those that show signs of rabies need to be eliminated. Unfortunately, those trapped cannot be tested at this time as there is no test besides testing on the brain post-sacrifice. There are scientist working on a test that would help with testing without sacrifice and I look forward to the day that they approve the test. Instead of a mass euthanization program that would undoubtedly kill lots of healthy animals, a program like an oral rabies vaccine (ORV) would likely be cheaper and still effective. Programs that trap and vaccinate can be effective, but are more expensive (these are called TVR or Trap-Vaccinate-Release). If cost is the main concern of the authorities in addition to public health, they should seriously review or re-review an ORV program. Some research by the USDA back in 2009 found that ORV was cost effective and beneficial. They show that the areas in Canada and the United States where ORV was used reacted well to it and the disease was eliminated in many areas it was utilized. Given that the area of interest is relatively small, I’d be shocked if the cost to implement an ORV program was more expensive than the current plan. They could combine programs as well (ORV baiting and trapping to either eliminate those showing signs of rabies or TVR those who don’t).

Please do not wholesale trap and kill all the foxes. Find another solution. Foxes, along with coyotes, keep down the rodent population.
This is insane!
Spread vaccines instead
