I find it unacceptable that 12.5% of the University of Puget Sound’s endowment fund is invested in coal and fossil fuels, contributing over $39 million to an industry that is responsible for devastating climate change.

I call on the Board of Trustees of the University of Puget Sound and its outsourced chief investment officer to commit to the following:

1. Abstaining from all new investments in the Underground 200, including the Filthy 15, and private hydrocarbon companies.

2. Divesting from all current holdings in the Underground 200, including the Filthy 15, and private hydrocarbon companies within five years.

Note: The Underground 200 is an annually updated list of the world's 100 largest coal companies and the world's 100 largest oil and gas companies. The Filthy 15 is a list of the 15 largest and dirtiest coal companies in the United States.

It's time for the University of Puget Sound to align its financial practices with the progressive environmental outlook embodied in its curriculum and supported with such enthusiasm and commitment by its many student activists. Let's join Stanford University, Pitzer College, the University of Glasgow, the Rockefeller Foundation (run by the heirs of the Standard Oil fortune), and many other institutions, and do the right thing--divest from fossil fuels!

Undergrad and now grad student. This is important. You control a lot of money. The coal and oil companies may not miss it, but it's important to us you do the right thing.

I am a neighbor of UPS. Please take the right path and show an example. Show that you are dedicated to protecting the future of the young people you purport to care for.

"Sustainability provides a learning context for the highest educational goals in the mission of the university: critical analysis, active inquiry, a rich knowledge of self, a sense of place and service, and interdisciplinary understanding. The study of sustainability examines the interactions between human values and behaviors with environmental limits." And yet, education is nothing without self-reflection and improvement. Without action, these are just mere words. Quote Cited: http://www.pugetsound.edu/about/sustainability-at-puget-sound/in-the-curriculum/

As an alumni, I will be happy to give back to the university financially when I know my money is being invested in an environmentally friendly way.

We live in a world which we are quickly poisoning. We need to take responsibility to stop and reverse the damage we are doing to our planet. I believe that God calls us to be stewards of this earth, and divesting from holdings in hydrocarbon companies is one thing we can do to be better stewards.
