District 64- wants to segregate 5th grade special needs kids

I'm happy to hear Dr. Heinz is personally reviewing the decision. This is what concerns me: "most of the parents of the affected children were not notified of the decision by the District and were not provided very much information about its reasoning. The most complete explanation of the District’s reasoning came from the former Special Ed director (Jane Boyd), who was asked questions about the policy during the Nov. 13 board meeting." That's astounding. This is a big decision and the lack of communication with these parents is unacceptable.

Absolutely a BAD idea!!!

No child, especially one with special needs, should be force to skip a year of education.

There has to be an assessment done. The student is at risk. I have two special needs children and my high functioning student was assessed and he was placed elsewhere. But his friend stayed at the school. It is not a one shot decision. My son is an example of your goal, but not all students are. Please include an assessment.

This is not right. These children have gone through so much why make things harder for them? Life is tough enough for God’s sake.

This is why we decided to stay out of district 64 and stay in 62 while house hunting. Father of an 6 yr old autistic son w/ s.p.d . So glad we stayed in the des plaines district.

Although I do not live in this district, I feel I must sign this petition for the families who do. As a mother with a child who had an IEP from 5th grade through high school I feel this would cause far more harm than good for the students. Please do not make this change. Children need to be treated as equal. Treating them as if they are not good enough only makes them believe that they are not good enough. And that is very sad.

Inclusion helps. This would effect educational gains as well as social gains.

I grew up with a sister who had behavioral problems and learning disabilities. She thrived in her non-segregated classes and underachieved in the “special” classes.

That would be detrimental for all if that were to happen. Keep them together, please!

Inclusion is good for all children.

Please reconsider separating special needs children from their peers.

The district is not abiding by the laws surrounding the Least Restrictive Environment LRE. It is not in the best interest of the students.

This is shameful.

Every child has the right to be treared equal regardless of his/her special needs and disabilities. No child should be either segregated or neglected.
