It is now very clear that a high percentage (approaching a majority in the Mid-Atlantic) are simply unable or not disciplined enough to wait until they are done driving to continue their obsession with their email, texts and social media on their phones. Until we actually have all self-driving cars, we have to change this behavior immediately. We who ride bicycles thousands of miles a year, see it up close and very personal and I'm an outside sales rep who drives most days and it is epidemic.

As a road cyclist, I am at particular risk from distracted driving; as a driver, I feel it is my duty to pay attention to the road and to look out for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and my fellow motorist. Let's bring back that bumper sticker that said "Careful driving is a civic duty."
