The Illinois State Police has charged Teresa Sherwood, an ISP CCL Firearms Instructor, who had been granted the authority to “tailor her curriculum as needed, provided the listed minimum requirements are delivered” with failure to deliver a 16 hour curriculum. The ISP failed to recognize the pedagogy of online instruction, as currently used by the University of Illinois and countless other fully accredited colleges and universities, as valid hours towards satisfying their course requirements.

We the undersigned implore Stewart J. Umholtz, Tazewell County State's Attorney, to dismiss all charges against Sherwood (People vs. Teresa Sherwood 2019CM000202) for the offense of Providing a False Certification of Firearms Training and to further direct the ISP to explicitly recognize in the “Request for Approval of a Concealed Carry License Firearm Curriculum,” the validity of online instruction and that an instructor’s tailored curriculum may include an online portion.

Teresa is still facing these charges for simply using modern teaching methods that universities have relied upon for years. I am currently working with legal experts to challenge how the Illinois State Police interprets their own curriculum requirements against the reality of online instruction. Your continued patience while we handle these behind the scenes hurdles keeps us focused on the ultimate goal of clearing her name.

Seeing this level of support for Teresa feels like a weight lifting off my chest because I know how hard she fought to provide honest instruction. This momentum proves that people understand the absurdity of these charges and the urgent need for the state to evolve its learning standards.

This is SO sad! Why not involve the State's legal system and expertise in something far more "criminal" than this is??

Teresa Sherwood did a great job preparing the class for the concealed carry permit. As a Vietnam veteran I found no problem with her instructions. Very through.

My husband and I were both very happy with the class and learned so much in class and at the shooting range! Teresa was a great instructor and we would like our cc cards back! We did pay and complete the class!

Teresa Sherwood taught us everything we needed in classroom and at the shooting range. She made sure we all felt comfortable with our hand guns.

She was very precise and to the point..very honest and law abiding. I feel she has been accused falsely as she went through the whole course. I learned a lot from her knowledge of this course.
