Discovery Parent-Child Preschool is funded in part by the Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP). This means that the teachers at Discovery are Adult Education teachers with teaching credentials (not just ECE units) in Parent Education, and the parents at Discovery are in fact the students in the Parent Education classes. We get our education by working in the class, and attending the monthly meetings with Parent Education speakers. MAEP has decided to permanently eliminate the entire Parent Education Program. This will mean that Discovery will lose around $15,000 per year in funding and other benefits such as affiliation, publicity, and staff development. Having to make up this difference will likely mean tuition increases, which can can "price out" some of our families. The cuts also impact our ability over the long term to attract and maintain qualified teachers who are properly trained to support the Parent Education component of our program.
