We, the undersigned, as families andresidents of the City of Brockton would like to express our desire thatthe Department of Elementary and Secondary Educatioin (DESE)NOT grant a charter to the New Heights Charter School.
The people of Brockton are extremely proud of the great strides our public schools have made in recent years. We are also proud of the fact that children and families in Brockton already have a plethora of choices available to them that suits nearly every need a child may have. As an urban school district Brockton Schools have had virtually unprecedented success and satisfaction with our system. Also as an urban district we cater to a large amount of special ed students and english language learners. Students who require more resources and generally do not help increase the district’s test scores. Despite this, our system achieves many great things that we would be in danger of losing if a large portion of the budget were to be diverted to an un-needed charter school.
We ask that you please consider the record of choices and achievement in Brockton, as well as the wishes and desired of the families and residents here and DENY a charter to New Heights Charter School.

The feedback from our community has been exhausting to process but it confirms that we are right to question this charter. I am spending my nights reading through the official proposals and it is clear that they do not see our public schools the way we do.

Seeing the momentum behind this fight is exhausting but it keeps me moving forward. I am drained by how hard we have to work to protect our schools, but knowing so many neighbors are in this with me makes the weight a little easier to carry.

Brockton already offers a multitude of alternative educational settings. I have read New Height's application and there is nothing they are offering that Brockton does not already do for our students. We can not afford to fund this school; our budget is already stretched too thin as it is.
Brockton's schools make amazing progress considering the high poverty rate (nears 80% in some schools), Engligh Langauge Learning population, high minority population (correlates with low standardized test scores), and high mobility rate. Who is getting the kickback from this charter school company that we have to keep fighting this?
This report was just issued by the National Association of Charter School Authorizers. In our group, Massachusetts is ranked #19 out of #21 when its policies were rated against best practices identified by the Association. Brockton is not a city whose schools are in trouble. The loss of money that would go to a charter school is taxpayer money that needs accountability that our public schools must provide. A charter school is for profit and does not have to meet the same requirements. Brockton offers top notch education to our children including those in special education and the many children of Brockton needing ESL, a charter school does not.
The New Heights Charter School is not needed in Brockton. It does not offer anything that the BPS offers and it will take away from an already underfunded school system that has worked tirelessly to improve achievement and provide a caring school community for the children and teens of Brockton.
I am a resident of Brockton and a parent of a child who attends the Brockton Public Schools. I am fully against this proposed charter school in Brockton.

Plenty of choice already here and outstanding teachers that challenge. My own children are proof!
