The University of Bradford is the only university in the UK that offers its students the opportunity to study dementia care at a degree level, however, it has decided NOT to offer this valuable course to future students anymore from 2018 next year.
This means, there will be NO university in the whole of UK where students can study Dementia care at a degree level. This is very sad news for people living with dementia and their families and a step backwards in Dementia care in the UK.
Dementia is widely under diagnosed, and research suggest that, there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. (https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/info/20027/news_and_...)

Ignorance is the greatest enemy for people with dementia. We must expand opportunities to educate not reduce them.
As a dementia consultant/MHlthSc I have spent my entire career attempting to educate people in the health profession about dementia. To not provide knowledge in this crucial area of need is condoning the ongoing neglect and abuse of people living with dementia based on archaic negative stereotypical viewpoints that come from pure ignorance. I am appalled and disgusted.
Whilst the commercial reality of ensuring that the university can cover its costs by running successful courses, that is the winning and retaining of students in sufficient numbers to sustain the course, there appears to be a lack of imagination here to find new models for course delivery. It feels like a betrayal of past university alumni and achievements to surrender the inspirational B.Sc. course and replace it with a reconstituted curriculum in a diluted pick and mix format. Much has been said here and I don't think I can add to the contributions save to say that "research into practice", the vehicle for broadcasting this learning , looks as though it is about to become research with out practice, that Bradford will become a shrinking silo of research with no means of distribution. That will be a sad day for all those living with dementia.
We need to keep education on. There is no other option than adapt what is needed .polarization is not an answer.
This needs to continue to educate the next generation
No country can eliminate even one single class at the university level we must address and eradicate the misconceptions and teach how to care for those with dementia.
We need these educational courses, certifications that currently do not exist, in the US, too!

This knowledge is desperately needed worldwide. I spent 30 hours a week with my sister, who has early onset dementia, because the Personal Care Assistants have only done an 18 month course in Aged Care at TAFE (Technical & Further Education) and it concerns me deeply that the do not have the knowledge or skills. In Australia we now have a fully online degree course in Dementia Care offered by The University of Tasmania. Perhaps the UK could partner with them?
