Ina May is one of the most well known if not THE most well known voice of midwifery in the US, and I think if she is going to work from and speak from that place of power in the birthing community, she needs to be accountable to the easily accessible and significantly publicized work on race and birth outcomes in the US. If I, as a total lay person can be, without even really seeking the information out, she *needs* to be. What she said in the video perpetuates extremely harmful and racist ideas about women of color and birth, and because of the amount of power she holds and the number of people who hold her in the highest esteem, she needs to be accountable for those words. There are many, many strong, beautiful voices in the birthing community, and if Ina May Gaskin has chosen ignorance and racism, than we are better off letting some new voices, hopefully some women of color, move to the front of the room.

Is Ina May Gaskin OK? This is totally out of character, I suggest she get medically and psychologically evaluated ASAP! I agree with all else on the petition.

Can't say I'm surprised at her misguided racist assumptions of the health care crises amongst Black (pregnant) women. These beliefs are held by many white women in the birth profession. Everyone involved in this event should be notified to issue an apology for her error, lack of compassion, and ignorance to black women everywhere! To be honest even that's not enough smh

The old guard needs to step aside and let women of color guide the conversation. If White Women aren't interested in saving lives, then they need to step down or educate themselves. I cannot support Ina May any more.

Multiple sources describe substandard care given to women of color. Black women with college degrees have the same maternal outcomes as white women with high school educations, and Black women, in published studies, are less likely to smoke during pregnancy. I could go on.....racism is real, and t s ingrained in the structures of society and care.
