As an epidemiologist studying the social factors impacting black women's and infant's health, I'm tremendously disappointed in and angered by Ina May's presentation. "Facts" (e.g. the drug overdose bit) were presented with consideration of their contexts and caveats. Ina May, please do better. We need to prioritize lifting up the most marginalized, the most oppressed, the most burdened among us. We need to listen to their stories, and trust their accounts of their everyday lived experiences. When we do that, we ALL win. Signed, a black woman.

Ina May Gaskin's ignorance is a choice to uphold her privilege and those of white supremacy. She has access to other choices and this pattern is unforgivable. Ina May's followers are complicit in her behavior. This is literal life and death for POC. It's long been time for a change.

I am so disappointed to hear this, as someone who had a home birth and was inspired by Ina May's work at that time. But being expert in one thing doesn't immunize you from being racist. The birth community must do better. This is not ok.

The list of changes that need to be made is realistic, thoughtful and absolutely necessary. Black women MUST be included in the dialogue around birth work AND given the respect they deserve- starting with attending to this list immediately.

This is not the first time I've heard this. I also believe that the historical black women who were really the original community midwives deserve recognition. Ina benefitted from white privilege at the start of her career and continues to do so. Her latest comments disgust me.

Nurse, MSN student, trained as a CPM, and doula, have given birth at home and in a birth center. I trained with Ina May Gaskin and her colleagues at The Farm during a week long workshop. I admired so many aspects of her approach. I've used information and perspectives she shared in service of clients and patients, and in my own life. Between her devastating betrayal of LGBTQIAP+ people and her racism, I've lost trust in her. This is part of a larger, entrenched pattern in the world of alternative approaches to reproductive healthcare. It causes real harm, and we can't be afraid to stand up to even the most respected members of our community when they do wrong.
