I am saddened and angered that one of our leading home birth advocates would blame black women instead of the systemic racism of our society and health care for these maternal deaths. Shame in her. Be a voice for change.

I have met Ina May. I plan to write her and ask what the hell!

As a Mexican American I support our minority sisters.

This is horrifying and wrong. Pure example of both racism and the perspective of white privilege.

Systematic racism is real, and it kills innocent black women and children everyday.

Thank you Tasha Portley, Erricka Bailey, and Jasmine Banks for starting this petition and drawing attention to the very appalling issue of maternal and infant mortality among people of color due to racism. As a white woman birth worker I have not thought enough about my own white privilege, and though it is uncomfortable to acknowledge it, the racism that I've unconsciously perpetuated and its harmful effects.

Ina May Gaskin's comments are either willful ignorance or outright anti-black. Her comments and half apology are unacceptable in this era of clear data and known impact of racism on birth and maternal outcomes.

Ina May's tremendous body of work amounts to little if her bias perpetuates misinformation that keeps our most vulnerable mothers at greater risk. Her statements ignore the barriers to access that are more pronounced for women of color because of systemic racism, and deepen the divide between these women and quality care.

Ina May.... this is disgraceful!

There really is no excuse for denying the knowledge of women of color in the birth world or any other. Ina seemed to be on her heels after that question and falling back on racist stereotypes and judgments. I feel she's been in a bubble too long out there on the farm.

The birth community holds itself accountable for perpetuating racism. We must trust black women. We must dedicate our work to dismantling systems of oppression.

Morality and ethical responsibilities to your field of work demands action. Lack of support shows complicity and aceptance. That is unacceptable. ICAN must move forward in denouncing abuse, racism, oppression and violence against people of color.

Ina May Gaskin has always been my go to for pregnancy and midwifery information. I am saddened and ashamed to hear her response to such an important and devastating matter. Black women, babies, and families matter. Systemic racism is real and it does effect the care provided to women of color. The facts show this to be true. I am throwing away my Ina May books. I want you to know that I trust black women, and the black community. Black lives matter and anything short of that narrative must be fought with a vengeance. As someone who worked at a birth center, and has doula friends, I know how deeply racism goes in a birthing community.

She also doesn't support body autonomy
