In 1992, Carteret County voters overwhelmingly decided to make Carteret County School Board elections non-partisan. The referendum passed with 83% of the vote. In 2017, the Carteret County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution overturning that vote of the people and called for partisan school board elections. This was done without proper notice nor any input from the general public. This resolution was supported by our local state representatives and passed by the North Carolina General Assembly. Citizens Against Partisan Schools (C.A.P.S.) believes that the citizens of Carteret County should have final decision on school board elections. C.A.P.S. is demanding that the Carteret County Commissioners place a Referendum on the 2018 ballot that simply asks "Do you want partisan school board elections in Carteret County" Yes or No

The response to this petition confirms that the residents of Carteret County possess a deep desire to reclaim their authority over local school board elections. This momentum suggests that our community is eager to revisit the decision made by the commissioners without public input. We look forward to presenting this collective demand to the board as our next primary objective.

I was actively involved in having the BOE changed from partisan to non-partisan. I am against it becoming partisan again without the voters making the decision. The election should be moved to the November election. I never understood the logic behind placing it in the primary elections.
The process by which this switch to a partisan school board denied the citizens of Carteret County to vote, and overturned an overwhelming vote, over 4 to 1 in favor of a non-partisan school board in 1992. This is outright abuse of the powers entrusted to the County commissioners, and needs to be returned to the 1992 outcome.
I believe the citizens of Carteret County have the right to vote on whether their School Board is partisan or not.
I never heard of a partisan school board before this and the politics done by Carteret County Commissioners is so dirty. Stop trying to force people to think like you.
Politics should not have a place in making school decisions. People have already spoken out against doing this once already and the commissioners changed it on their own. I want non partisan school board elections.
What justification is there for partisanship in schools?!

Democracy is under assault in Carteret County by seven all white, all male, all Republican, Tea Party controlled and dominated County Commissioners. Citizens of this county deserve better. And, come November, there will be retribution!
